Community Education & Support
The Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion’s own cancer outreach programs
include the following:
Buddy Check 3
One of our patient navigators and a nurse from the Telfair Pavilion go
on the air at a local TV news station to remind women to do their monthly breast
self-exam.
Health Fairs – Representatives from the
LCRP attend several health fairs at large local employers each year, educating
employees about prevention and early detection of cancers.
Community Health Advisors – The LCRP has also worked to develop
outreach programs that engage community volunteers or “community health
advisors.” Particularly helpful is their ability to reach the indigent
populations, create communicative pathways and build a bridge of trust between
the community and the healthcare providers.
St. Mary’s Community Center
serves the Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood, a struggling African-American community
in Savannah. St. Mary’s works alongside neighborhood residents to improve
their quality of life through assistance in three major areas: basic needs,
education/job training and health services. Health services include daily
blood pressure checks and blood sugar screenings, a weekly cardiovascular clinic for
high blood
pressure, quarterly mammography
and cervical cancer screenings, a weight-loss program, and annual prostate screenings and
flu vaccinations.
The St. Mary's Health Center opened on April 29, 2006, for free health care
of uninsured citizens of Chatham County. The Health Center provides non-emergent
care, free prescriptions and links patients with the Community HealthCare Center.
The medical staff consists of two physicians and two nurse practitioners, volunteers
and two part-time paid OB/GYN physicians.
African-American Health Information & Resource Center conducts
health screenings and sponsors events specifically targeted to the African-American
community’s healthcare concerns.
YMCA of Coastal Georgia
and SJCHS formed a partnership called Health Connection
to incorporate wellness and health promotion services at the eight YMCA locations.
Free services provided to YMCA members 18 years and older include: health screenings,
skin cancer
screenings, health education classes, and medical procedure and disease counseling.
The mission of Community Health Mission is to provide access to primary health
care in a compassionate, dignified and appropriate manner to individuals who
do not have insurance and who do not qualify for Medicare and Medicaid. The
Center also emphasizes disease prevention and access to preventive services,
with an overall goal of diminishing health disparities by increasing access
to health care, screenings and treatment. The Lewis Cancer & Research
Pavilion serves patients referred by the Community HealthCare Center for cancer
care. For more information, click here.
